Clean water is often taken for granted, but with over 770 million people lacking access to clean drinking water globally, clean water isn’t a reality for all. A lack of clean water contributes to many challenges in a community – from increased risk of water-borne illness to the burden of managing household water needs, which often precludes women and girls from attending school or earning income for their families.
Through our Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program, we have been providing clean drinking water to children and families in communities around the world with P&G’s innovative Purifier of Water packets since 2004.
Working in collaboration with more than 150 global advocacy and implementing partners, we are proud to announce we have successfully achieved our next milestone — delivering 20 billion liters of clean drinking water to families that lack access to safe drinking water in over 90 countries across the globe.
“We’re excited to reach the 20-billion-liter milestone in our Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program journey,” said Marc Pritchard, Chief Brand Officer, P&G. “Through our long-standing partnerships with organizations such as Save the Children and many others, together we’re helping transform the lives of communities and families around the world through the power of clean water.”
The Impact of CSDW in Nigeria
We are marking our 20 billion liter milestone with Carrine, her husband and three children, Cameroonian refugees living in Amana, a community in Obanliku, a Local Government Area of Cross River State in Nigeria. Prior to the delivery of P&G Purifier of Water packets, Carrine’s children frequently fell ill to water-related diseases from drinking unsafe water in the community. Since receiving P&G water purification materials from Save the Children in September 2021, the number of visits Carrine has made to the clinic to treat her children for water-related illness has decreased, saving her money and enabling her children to attend school regularly.
“We’re proud to partner with P&G to ensure children have safe drinking water, enabling their brighter, healthier futures,” said Janti Soeripto, President and Chief Executive Officer, Save the Children U.S. “We congratulate P&G for reaching this 20 billion liter milestone, and look forward to continuing to work with their Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program so more and more families, like Carrine’s, can thrive.”
Access to clean, drinkable water can help keep families and children healthy, enabling educational and economic opportunities and empowering families to build a better life. P&G and the CSDW Program will continue to transform lives through the power of clean water as we continue towards our goal to deliver 25 billion liters of clean water by 2025.
