On May 22, 2011, one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history struck Joplin, Missouri. In minutes, lives were lost, homes were destroyed, and daily routines were upended. An entire community was left facing the difficult work of recovery.

In the years since, Joplin’s story has been one of community resilience. Neighbors showed up for one another. Strangers offered help. And across Joplin, small, everyday acts helped people begin to rebuild — not just their homes but also their sense of stability and hope.

As we mark the 15th anniversary of the event, we honor those who were lost in Joplin and reflect on how this resilient community came together to move forward.

Moving Forward, Together

For generations, P&G has provided disaster relief, working alongside partners to provide essential products and services when they are needed most. In the aftermath of Joplin, P&G and its partners quickly responded with the Tide Loads of Hope program, offering free clean laundry services to the community. The program washed more than 3,000 loads of laundry, helping approximately 1,900 families, including P&G employees, begin getting back to everyday life.

Through its broader Disaster Relief program, P&G also provided crucial product donations and services, ensuring essential supplies were available to those in need.

Susan, a former P&G employee and Joplin resident, recalled the moment she returned home after the tornado: “I did not see my house until the next morning, and when we pulled up, it was gone. That’s the worst feeling in the world. We realized we had nothing to wear, so we took our clothes to Tide Loads of Hope.” She added, reflecting on the power of community and support received, “It was so nice to be able to come into town and be with everybody else and see that everybody was OK. It was very emotional because at one point, that was all I had, those couple of bags of clothing.”

Hear from Susan and other members of the Joplin community as they share the moments that changed their lives and the impact made by the P&G Disaster Relief Program and our partners.
