How to Stand Out: Tips for Shining in the P&G Application Process

Applying for a job can be stressful. You might be wondering ... Do I have enough experience? Are my skills a good match for this role? What if I say the wrong thing in the interview?

At P&G, the hiring process isn’t about how well candidates use keywords or provide the “right answers.” It's about getting to know the candidate — their approach to work and whether they're a good long-term fit for P&G. "We want an individual to feel comfortable bringing their background, their understanding and themselves to the table," said Jesse Caylor, Ph.D., Global Talent Acquisition, Senior HR Manager, Selection & Assessments.
One of the most important things you can do to be successful when applying to P&G is to be yourself.
The Process: What to Expect and Tips for Success
P&G has a build-from-within approach, which means our recruiters are looking for people who demonstrate qualities that go beyond one role and are a fit with the Company’s culture. “We're not just hiring you for your first role,” said Caylor. “We’re looking at the skills and abilities that it takes to be successful long term.” These include skills such as ownership, adaptability, learning agility, resilience and teamwork.
Below are the steps you can expect and a few tips to guide you during P&G’s hiring process.

Step 1: Application
The first step in every career journey at P&G is submitting an application. This is the first opportunity to showcase your experience and skills.
TIP: Research P&G’s culture.
Before you apply, familiarize yourself with the role and the Company’s purpose, values and principles. You will feel more confident going into the process and be better able to demonstrate how your experience aligns with P&G’s commitment to improving consumers’ everyday lives.
TIP: Tailor your application.
Customize your résumé and cover letter to highlight experiences, skills and achievements that are relevant to the role and to P&G. Showcase your impact by sharing numbers and results.
Step 2: Assessment
Based on the role, you may be directed to take one or more online assessments prior to interviews:
- The P&G Performance Assessment (PPA) evaluates work style and experiences. There are no right or wrong answers because the questions are about your personal preferences and experiences. The assessment is not timed and there are no knowledge-based questions.
- The Interactive Assessment (IA) measures cognitive abilities like problem-solving, memory and task-switching through a gamified format. This assessment is timed and must be completed in one sitting.
TIP: Create the space and time for self-reflection.
The best way to prepare for the assessments is by ensuring you have a distraction-free place where you can give them your full attention. Also take the time to reflect on your experiences and work style. And while both assessments are mobile-enabled, P&G recommends taking them on a computer to ensure full focus and best performance.
Bonus: For every candidate who completes an assessment, P&G donates a liter of clean drinking water through the Company's Children's Safe Drinking Water initiative.

Step 3: Interviews
If you meet the requirements of the assessment stage, the next step is an interview, which can be a one-on-one or a panel interview. You can have up to three interviews.
TIP: Be a STAR in interviews.
P&G interviews focus on behavioral questions designed to better understand you.
“Be prepared to bring those examples that you’re most proud of and that you feel most represent how you approach work,” Caylor said. P&G recommends using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) or CAR (Context, Action, Result) method to structure your responses.
For recent graduates and entry-level candidates, don't be afraid to draw on all your experiences, including those in school and your personal life, to find the best examples.
Mid-career and experienced professionals should be prepared to showcase broader experience that demonstrates growth potential, not just specific skills for the role.
No matter your level, remember the interview is a two-way street, so plan for an open and insightful conversation. Bring your own questions to evaluate whether the role and the Company are a good fit for you.
Step 4: Job Offer
You are evaluated based on your assessments, interviews, résumé and whether you are a good fit for the role and P&G’s culture. Once a decision is made, the hiring team extends a job offer.
TIP: Winning takes time.
Sometimes a particular role or timing isn't the right fit. If you aren’t selected for a role, you are encouraged to reapply when you’ve gained new experiences or when different opportunities arise. While assessments are required every 12 months, you are welcome to apply for additional roles during that time.
