Listen, Learn, Innovate: How P&G and Pampers Serve Every Baby

Through our Pampers brand, we’re combining deep consumer understanding with R&D mastery to create solutions that serve every family, at every stage.

At P&G, our purpose is simple: to improve everyday life in small but meaningful ways. For over 185 years, this has been the driving force behind our innovation. We believe that true breakthroughs come from listening deeply to the people we serve, leveraging world-class science, and empowering our employees to solve unmet needs.

Our Pampers brand is a powerful demonstration of this philosophy in action. From the most medically fragile infants to the most discerning parents across the globe, Pampers demonstrates how consumer-driven insight and R&D mastery combine to create products that truly matter. Here are three distinct stories of that innovation in action.

The Promise: Listening to the Most Vulnerable

Pampers Preemie Swaddlers Pxxs (United States)

Pampers Preemie Swaddlers Pxxs, the world's tiniest diaper, held with the care that inspired its handcrafted design.

Our commitment begins with caring for every baby, no matter how small. When a staggering 388% rise in NICU admissions for babies born at just 22 weeks presented a critical challenge, our teams took notice. These "micro-preemies" — weighing under a pound — were too small and fragile for any existing diaper.

The drive to solve this came from the personal and professional passion of our employees. Amy Wiford, a Pampers Nurse Specialist, brought her unique insight as a former NICU nurse and a mother to a premature infant. Seeing even smaller babies in the NICU gave Wiford profound empathy for the courage of their parents and the staff who care for them.

This passion is reflected in the design philosophy itself. For parents in the NICU, simple acts can feel monumental. "We know that changing a diaper is often one of the first things premature parents can do for their baby," Wiford explains. To honor this moment, the design focuses on creating a normalizing experience for families.

"Our premature diapers have the same look and feel as our full-term products — think graphics, shape, and softness," Wiford says. "Having similar features to those of our full-term diapers helps parents feel more comfortable." One specific innovation is a fully reversible design with no distinct front or back, which "alleviates the concern of parents thinking they did something wrong."

This commitment is built on a legacy of trust. For over 50 years, Pampers has been a dedicated partner to hospitals, and our collaboration of more than 25 years with the March of Dimes has allowed us to fund grants, donate products, and design resources specifically for families navigating the challenges of the NICU.

This dedication is matched by our rigorous R&D process. Our foundational work developing diapers for premature babies involved collaboration with more than 200 nurses and therapists, over 50 hours of interviews, and more than 10,000 hours of research.

Pampers Preemie Swaddlers Pxxs is the latest evolution of this commitment, a handcrafted solution with purpose-built technology. Its design features a unique pre-formed shape to support efficient application for less disruption, proper positioning, and an adjustable fit against extremely premature skin. The stretchy, removable and re-attachable tabs allow caregivers to navigate the complex web of incubator tubing.

The impact of this innovation was immediate. Hospitals using the diaper called it a “real game-changer,” with one nurse exclaiming, “You (Pampers) did it!” Johni Cochran, MSN, NNP-BC, described Pxxs as a "vital innovation," noting its "fit and softness... we haven't seen before." This embodies our commitment to supporting these little fighters, their families, and the healthcare providers dedicated to giving them the best possible start in life.

The Performance: Innovating for No Compromise

Pampers AMORE (North America)

Packaging for Pampers AMORE diapers, featuring a smiling baby and text that reads 'Our Best Diaper,' with claims of being 'Our Most Absorbent,' 'Soft As Cashmere,' and 'Free of Fragrance.'

Pampers AMORE delivers on the modern parent’s desire for elite performance and complete peace of mind in one premium package.

Our deep listening also revealed that parents at home refuse to compromise between performance and gentle care. They want outstanding leak protection, but also demand a soft, comfortable feel and the peace of mind that comes from dermatologist-recognized, skin-safe ingredients. They want it all, and they believe their baby deserves it. Our answer is Pampers AMORE, the brand’s most premium and absorbent diaper yet.

The Pampers AMORE diaper, featuring a soft-as-cashmere feel and an advanced five-layer protection system for performance without compromise.

Our R&D teams engineered a product that delivers on both fronts, starting with a premium soft as cashmere feel. We designed its advanced five-layer protection system to solve a key concern identified by medical experts: prolonged contact with moisture. This system works to quickly capture and lock away wetness, keeping a baby’s delicate skin dry and healthy.

The result is a design validated by experts. Dr. Christopher B. Peltier, MD FAAP, notes that “Pampers AMORE offers fast absorption and a design that is consistent with what parents should look for when choosing a diaper for their baby.” This expert validation is the result of a rigorous development process. Our teams tested over 1,500 diapers for key attributes, ensuring the final product is clinically proven hypoallergenic, accredited by the Skin Health Alliance, and tested for over 1,000 harmful chemicals. This is how we deliver on the modern parent’s desire for elite performance and complete peace of mind.

The Perception: Learning from Cultural Insight

Pampers Prestige (Asia Pacific)

The packaging for Pampers Prestige, marketed as 'Luxury Silk,' was designed to deliver a superior impression by evoking the cultural power and premium feel of silk.

Our commitment to consumer understanding extends across the world. In China, we sought to understand the needs of highly discerning parents in the super-premium baby care segment. Through deep observational research, we discovered that these mothers, who our teams described as the "CEOs of their families," judged a diaper’s superiority based on three key "moments of truth": the immediate "first touch," flawless performance, and the social validation of their choice.

Armed with these insights, our Pampers team in China created Pampers Prestige, a super-premium offering that resonated with a powerful cultural symbol: silk. For over two millennia, silk has represented luxury, softness, and status in China. As P&G President and CEO Shailesh Jejurikar states, this innovation is truly unique: "Pampers Prestige is the only leading diaper brand that has silk materials in the product, delivering the ultimate experience of skin comfort and protection."

To bring this vision to life, our R&D teams achieved a series of technical breakthroughs. As Bobby Fan, P&G R&D Senior Director, explains, the team developed a way to blend real, high-quality silk fibers directly into the diaper's topsheet — the layer that touches the baby’s skin. For the exterior, they engineered an outer cover with ultra-fine fibers — just 1/12th the thickness of a human hair — to create what mothers described as a "melting softness." This complete sensory experience extends to the packaging itself, which is silky-smooth to the touch and uses a micro-embossing technology to create the fine, recognizable lines of silk fabric, ensuring every detail was designed to meet the discerning parent's desire for a product that is both functionally superior and culturally resonant.

The result of this consumer-first approach has been remarkable, driving Greater China Baby Care to double-digit organic sales growth over the past 18 months and increasing our market share by nearly three points. This success proves that leveraging our R&D mastery to connect with deep-seated cultural aspirations isn't just good design — it's good business.

From a handcrafted diaper for a premature baby to a cashmere-soft design that delivers total peace of mind, to the silk-inspired Pampers Prestige that delights the world’s most discerning parents — the common thread is P&G’s unwavering commitment. We listen, we learn, and we leverage our science to improve lives, one innovation at a time.
