Celebrating 15 Years of Partnership: P&G and WWF for a Sustainable Future

This Earth Day, we are proud to celebrate a remarkable milestone: 15 years of partnership between P&G and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This collaboration demonstrates the powerful impact that can be achieved when a global company unites with an environmental conservation organization. Together, we have helped create and drive several key initiatives, including progress on biobased plastics, climate and energy solutions and responsible forestry to create a lasting legacy of solutions that will benefit P&G and our industry.

A Legacy of Impact

Over the past decade and a half, our partnership with WWF has evolved into an effective model of how to move the needle on sustainability. By developing critical tools and thought leadership, we have advanced ambitious sustainability strategies both within P&G and beyond. Our sustainability strategy is built on three main levels of impact, each enhanced by our collaboration with WWF:

1. Reducing Our Impact

At P&G, we seek to reduce our environmental impact in our operations and supply chain. Our partnership with WWF has been key to achieving significant milestones in this area:

  • Biobased Plastics: In 2012, P&G joined WWF and seven other leading companies to launch the Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance. This platform has been instrumental in advancing thought leadership on the responsible sourcing of bioplastics — and the role of bioplastic in circular systems — to drive positive change for the bioplastic industry at scale.

  • Climate and Energy Solutions: P&G's support was crucial in establishing the Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA), which has facilitated low-cost, reliable, clean global electricity systems. Additionally, as a founding member of the Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC), our aim is to stimulate a market for clean thermal energy solutions, helping P&G make progress toward our clean energy ambitions.

  • Responsible Sourcing Practices: P&G is committed to responsible sourcing across our supply chain. WWF’s tools, like the Supply Risk Analysis (SRA) help evaluate sourcing risks for renewable materials, including crops like coconut oil, corn, sugarcane and cotton. This initiative promotes responsible sourcing practices.

  • A Future for Forests. In 2022, we achieved our goal of sourcing 75% Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)-certified wood pulp three years ahead of schedule. Today, 77% of P&G Corporate wood pulp is FSC certified while P&G Family Care reached 89%. P&G is also part of Forests Forward, a signature WWF program for corporate action in support of nature, climate and people that engages businesses to reduce their forest footprint and champion other on-the-ground actions — like forest restoration — to keep forests thriving.

2. Enabling Consumers to Reduce Their Impact

We seek to help consumers reduce their impact when they use our products. Our partnership with WWF has equipped us with valuable insights and initiatives that support this mission:

  • Consumer Engagement for Sustainable Habits: WWF is collaborating with brands like Tide and Ariel to promote simple yet impactful changes in household routines, such as washing laundry in cold water. With WWF’s expertise, we are collectively encouraging consumers to adopt these eco-friendly habits, reducing energy use and helping extend the life of clothing.

  • Water Stewardship Initiatives: Water is essential to P&G. We need water to make our products and people need water to use most of our products. Our strategy focuses on actions that reduce water in operations, restore water in water-stressed areas and respond to water challenges through innovation and partnership. These efforts are enabled through partnerships with organizations like WWF. For over a decade, WWF has provided P&G with expert guidance and tools, like the Water Risk Filter, to support our water stewardship journey. In 2016, we worked closely with WWF and other partners to inform our comprehensive facility water risk assessment. We continue to look for ways to work together to help build a water positive future that sustains people and nature now and for generations to come.

3. Scaling Solutions Across Industries

We recognize that achieving meaningful progress requires collaboration across industries. Our partnership with WWF has enabled us to lead broader change initiatives:

  • Innovative Approaches for Industry: By sharing insights gained through our collaboration with WWF, we are helping other brands and industries adopt sustainable practices. Together, our sustainability assessment methodology for plant-based inputs takes a holistic view of feedstock cultivation, including assessing risks and mitigation strategies for 13 environmental and social indicators. This framework promotes responsible sourcing and sustainable practices, establishing a common understanding of responsible sourcing considerations.

  • Advancing Climate and Energy Solutions: Through our involvement in CEBA and the RTC, we are part of a larger movement to democratize clean energy and promote renewable thermal energy solutions. Through P&G’s leadership, we are setting an example for other companies to follow.

Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Future

As we reflect on 15 years of partnership with WWF, our collaboration has driven meaningful change and established a pathway for future innovation and partnerships across industries.

On this Earth Day and beyond, we invite everyone to join us in making more sustainable choices. Together, we can continue to drive progress and inspire others to take action for a more sustainable impact on our planet.
