Expanding Support of Water Restoration Initiatives around The World

Water is essential for making and using P&G products, used by billions of people around the world — from washing dishes and doing the laundry, to washing your hair and shaving.

We continue to make progress on reducing water in our operations, restoring water in 18 water-stressed areas around the world and responding to water challenges through innovation and partnerships.

Guided by our Water Positive Future strategy, first announced in 2022, and with the help of our partners and implementing organizations, we continue to make progress toward our restoration goals by supporting projects that help to improve, better manage or protect freshwater resources.

We worked closely with the World Resources Institute (WRI), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and others to assess and prioritize basins based on water stress levels and where we can make a meaningful difference. This led to our Ambition 2030 goal to restore more water than is consumed at P&G manufacturing sites in 18 water-stressed areas around the world. To continue our progress against this goal, we are supporting two new projects within water-stressed basins in China and India.

Tianjin City Water Quality Improvement Project in Haihe Basin

Water quality is a key focus for environmental protection activities in China. P&G is supporting the China Environmental Protection Foundation (CEPF) to implement a project to improve the water quality of part of a canal in Tianjin City.

CEPF installed solar aerators and ecological floating islands with aquatic plant purification capabilities, and the project partner is engaging the local community by improving the riverbank near local residences.

Irrigation Efficiency in Musi-Krishna River Basin

In partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, this project supports the Centre for Environment Concerns (CEC) in pioneering a technology known as “SWAR” (System of Water for Agriculture Rejuvenation). The installation of this technology on 100 acres of agricultural land within the water-stressed Musi-Krishna basin in India is expected to reduce the impact on local groundwater aquifers by decreasing the amount of water needed to irrigate crops by delivering water directly into the soil. As part of implementation, CEC will also work to educate farmers on the benefits of sub-surface irrigation to support adoption and potential scaling of this solution.

SWAR technology connects to the pipes of drip irrigation systems and delivers water directly into the soil rather than to the soil’s surface, for more efficient watering.

We are focused on addressing shared water challenges within water-stressed areas where we work because we know it is where we can make the biggest difference. Our strategy will continue to evolve alongside our understanding of all the complex issues facing the world’s water resources. We will also continue to support a wide range of partners to amplify impact and accelerate simple solutions to help build a water positive future for all.
